Local Neuromuscular Dentist Expects Increased Interest in Mouth Guard after Saints' Victory
The SuperBowl victory of the New Orleans Saints is historic because the team became the first NFL team to be fitted for the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM), a neuromuscular dental appliance that purportedly increases an athlete's performance.
PITTSBURGH, PA, April 03, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- There are two possible contributors to the Saints' historic SuperBowl victory. First, the overtime rule that allowed the Saints a victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Second, some say the Saints owe part of their victory to the team's use of a new neuromuscular appliance known as the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM). Neuromuscular dentists, such as Pittsburgh's Dr. Babak Firouzi say the PPM increases athletes' balance, core strength, and endurance by appropriately aligning the jaw and therefore the upper spine.
The device's inventor, Dr. Anil Makkar, describes how it works, "When the jaw is down and forward, the back of your neck starts aligning with the back of your spine. When you have total alignment you have increased strength, balance, range of motion, and an increase in flexibility and endurance."
Local neuromuscular dentist Dr. Babak Firouzi describes the potential impact of the Saints' SuperBowl victory, "There is limited scientific evidence that PPM works. Instead, its rising popularity depends on anecdotal evidence of increased performance from top-name athletes. The Saints' victory will give the PPM more credibility than ever."
And it seems to have made a big difference in the number of people interested in PPM. Interest in the PPM rose dramatically after comments on it during a Monday Night Football game by color commentator Jon Gruden.
With a historic SuperBowl victory to its credit, PPM seems poised to make an even bigger impact on the future of sports medicine.
Dr. Firouzi notes that although the New Orleans Saints players were fitted with a premium version of the PPM, there are many models available. At the Center for Aesthetic Dentistry in Pittsburgh, Dr. Firouzi offers PPM options for athletes at every level of competition. The only exception is child athletes, but he does provide free mouthguards for children to help protect them against dental injury, no matter their sport.
